Short Courses

melbourne school of fine woodworking offers the following short courses and specialist weekend workshops to both members and non-members. Most short courses are scheduled on demand through the year.  If you are interested in attending any of our short courses or weekend workshops please send us your telephone or email details.  We will contact you to discuss the opportunity to run the short courses or weekend workshops you wish to attend and provide you with the cost of individual courses.

Introduction to Carving (CV1)

Learn the essentials of good woodcarving from a master craftsman. This one day workshop is designed to give you an opportunity to experiment with a variety of carving tools. Through one on one supervision and group demonstration, your tutor will show you how to sharpen the chisels and guide you through a series of exercises. You will learn how to work the wood grain, outline and finish from the chisel. At the end of the workshop you should have the confidence to handle the chisels and build upon your skills.

Students who have enjoyed the one day workshop may like to attend our one of our project based carving courses.

Incised Carving – Lettering for a nameplaque (LET)

Learn how carve letters or a simple design for a nameplate or plaque.

This course is suitable for beginners through to advanced woodworking students. The course covers lettering design and layout, and the theory and practice of cutting incised and relief letters in wood, through to the application of finishes to enhance your inscription.

Practice materials and carving tools are provided for the duration of the course. Bring your own timber for your sign* or purchase some at your first class.

Greenwood Carving - Bowl (GWB)

This course is suitable for beginners through to advanced woodworkers. Your tutor will guide you through each stage of the process and demonstrate the techniques of carving. You will be working with freshly cut green (unseasoned) timber. You will learn how to select and cleave a log and predict shrinkage so that you can design and shape your own bowl.

Tool Sharpening (SH)

This one day workshop will help you develop a perfect sharpening technique. It will cover the sharpening of chisels, planes, scrapers and spokeshaves and includes grinding, honing, setting & polishing.

Bring some of your own tools and be guided by our instructor to achieve that perfect cutting edge.

Plane Tuning (PT)

Learn how to renovate an old plane or correctly tune a new one. At this one day workshop you will learn how to flatten the sole, sharpen the blade and adjust, fettle and finely tune your plane. Bring at least one plane to work on…and make it sing!

Wood Finishing (WF)

This intensive two part workshop is designed for woodworkers wishing to develop their understanding of finishing products and techniques. The course covers surface preparation, product selection and application techniques through demonstration. With a wealth of experience to call upon, your tutor will explain and compare the suitability of different finishes. Includes shellacs, oils, varnishes and waxes.

Beginner Router Techniques (BR)

This one day workshop is designed for anyone interested in purchasing one of the woodworker’s most versatile tools. If you are thinking of buying a router this course will teach you what to look for before you make your choice. Topics at this popular hands-on course include choosing a suitable machine, health & safety, using a router table, making jigs and templates. Please bring a router if you have one.

Advanced Router Techniques (AR)

This one day workshop is suitable for advanced router users or woodworkers who have completed the beginner router workshop. Advanced tuition includes health and safety, jig construction, the use of specialist bits, freehand routing techniques.. Please bring a router.

Relief Carving (BB)

Project based course. Design a bread board featuring a wheat-ear motif and personal motto. A turned huon pine blank and practice timber included. All carving tools and mallet will be supplied for the duration of the course.

Secrets of the Trade (SOT)

Our furniture restorer has over 20yrs experience of restoring quality furniture for museums and private collections in Australia and England. He will teach you how to restore your treasured period or contemporary furniture and artefacts. You can learn how to remove stains, make repairs using traditional glues or decoratively tools leather. Includes French polishing, gilding and contemporary decorative faux finishes. A busy and sociable class.
